in a version by Martin Crimp

I'm not in your league - never will be - but Alice - / 'free speech' is a poisoned - believe me - chalice.

Martin Crimp's brand new razor-sharp reimagining of Molière's classic dark comedy is published together with his original 'thrillingly sophisticated' (Sunday Times) version of the play, first staged in 1996.

Martin Crimp's brand new razor-sharp reimagining of Molière's classic dark comedy is published together with his original 'thrillingly sophisticated' (Sunday Times) version of the play, first staged in 1996.

Alice, a brilliant novelist, despises the hollow contemporary mantras of "kindness" and "respect". But as she grows bolder and more outspoken in her refusal to accept hypocrisy or cliché, her personal and professional relationships begin to fracture. Soon she will learn the price to be paid - as an artist and as a woman - for daring to speak her mind.

Martin Crimp's first version of The Misanthrope, with a male protagonist, premiered in 1996 and was revived in the West End in 2009. This adaptation, first performed at the National Theatre, London, in June 2026, throws the play into a stunning new light.
